We live in an automatic world.
You wake up, and Siri tells you the weather. Go to the kitchen, and the coffee is already brewed. Hop in the Tesla, and it takes you right to work.
From the moment we wake up until we go to sleep, our lives are becoming automated.
Building Automation
Building automation works in much the same way. Primarily, it aims to complete autonomous control of a building’s systems. Essentially it is totally hands-off. Mechanical systems, security, fire, lighting, HVAC and humidity control, and ventilation systems in a building. Overall, the goal is for all of these to work together, even across several buildings.
Temperature Control
Keeping the climate within a certain range is important in a building. Ultimately, workers can be susceptible to heat stress if the building is too hot. As a result, productivity is directly linked to worker comfort. That means it’s in the best interest of the building’s owner, or occupant, to keep the workers happy.
Different occupants also have different climate needs. In essence, machines can generate heat. Additionally, they can also give off steam. That’s why some buildings have wide-open garage doors which let in cold air. An automated system monitors these climates and automatically adjusts the temperatures.
Security Systems
Security systems are a crucial factor in building automation. That being said, if a building’s security system is not properly automated, it is susceptible to theft or vandalism. Therefore, an automated security system informs the necessary authorities if any system is out of place.
Fire Systems
Fire systems in a building have saved countless lives and countless dollars. In effect, automated fire systems are a must-have in a modern building. Protection of life and property should be the number one priority for any building owner. Therefore, make sure that your building’s fire systems are up to snuff. Contact your local MEP consultants.
Lighting Systems
Automated lighting systems are energy and cost-efficient. Conversely, lighting an empty room is a waste of both money and energy. Therefore, an automated lighting system will only use a building’s lighting when it’s needed. Ultimately, you can save on bills and save the planet with an effective lighting system.
Just like lighting, ventilation is not ALWAYS necessary. An automated ventilation system increases or decreases ventilation based on current conditions. In such a system, when pollutants are present, it’s important to pump up the ventilation. On the other hand, when they aren’t, ventilation can be decreased.
Building automation systems are an important part of modern engineering. Essentially, if you’re unsure that your building is functioning at full efficiency, call a qualified electrical engineer.
